001: Who Am I?

Mine has been a life of hits and misses. "Oh Marton, this role will be the one that takes you all the way." I've heard that so many times now, it's become passe'.

My name is Marton Csokas (pronounced Cho - Kash for those of you that care), a Kiwi actor from that small country on the underbelly of the world called New Zealand which is now frequently referred to as Middle Earth since LOTR. Sure I played a part in that, not that most people know. I'm certainly not a natural blonde, nor do I have pointy elven ears. Still, I enjoyed playing Celeborn, such as it was.

On 2 December 2005, Aeon Flux will finally be on wide release. I star as Charlize Theron's nemesis/lover, Chairman Trevor Goodchild. Yes, I know that seems more than a little erratic, but when have I ever chosen a role that was just an average guy? I'd explain him a bit more, but that would be giving away trade secrets and we can't have that now, can we?

I play many men that people describe as evil or the bad guy. I don't see them as bad, just simply misunderstood products of their own upbringings or environments. Darko was just a big boy that was raised by his father into a habit of reverse racism. It was his upbringing, not something he came up with on his own. And I really can't blame Yorgi from xXx for wanting to rid the world of its government. It's not as if government is doing a great deal to help, are they? I'm not saying I condone his desire to just kill them all, but it was his solution. My role in Kingdom of Heaven was a bit of a fop. Guy is a self professed religious zealot that will stop at nothing to rid the world of infidels. Still, he's another case of his upbringing and bad choices. That doesn't necessarily mean he's a bad man. I played Redding in The Great Raid (currently due for DVD release next month) wreaking havoc amongst the POWs stuck in camp with him and finally Edgar, a complete and utter nutter. Sure he killed his wife, but he doesn't think he did anything wrong, and from his point of view, I'd say I have to agree with him.

That having been said, I believe you can find the good in all people if you really look for it. Even mass murderers like Borias from Xena have their redeeming qualities. I love being an actor. It's a constant look into the human condition.
